Speech Teams Compete at State Tourney in Peoria

IHSA State Speech Meet to be held at Peoria Civic Center Feb. 17-18

 

PEORIA, IL - High school students from across the state will meet in Peoria for the Illinois High School Association's (IHSA) 2012 state speech meet Feb. 17-18 at the Civic Center.  Between 750 and 1,200 students are expected to participate in the tournament.

Students can compete in the 15 following events: Dramatic Duet Acting, Dramatic Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Humorous Duet Acting, Humorous Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Informative Speaking, Oratorical Declamation, Oratory, Original Comedy, Poetry Reading, Prose Reading, Radio Speaking and Special Occasion Speaking.  Participants can choose to participate in up to two categories to be judged. 

Round 1 begins at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, with the last competition scheduled at 4:30 p.m.  Round 2 begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, with matches also set for 9:45 a.m. and 11 a.m.  Finals are at 1:30 and 3 p.m. Saturday.  Also Saturday, at 5:30 p.m., is the awards ceremony.  Winning speakers from each event are granted the prestigious opportunity to perform for the entire Illinois speech community at large.  

Admission to this event is free for the public, and community support for these students is encouraged.  Round schedules and up-to-the-minute results will be available on the IHSA website at ihsa.org.  This is the third consecutive year the tournament has been held in the River City.

The Illinois High School Association governs the equitable participation in interscholastic athletics and activities that enrich the educational experience.  The purpose of the IHSA is to provide leadership for the development, supervision and promotion of good sportsmanship in interscholastic competition and other activities in which its member schools choose to engage.

            The Illinois High School Association's 2012 state speech meet will create an economic impact of about $67,500 and fill 300 hotel rooms in the Peoria Area.  There will be about 750 individuals in attendance.

            The PACVB represents an eight county region including Bureau, Fulton, Marshall, Mason, Peoria, Stark, Tazewell and Woodford. The organization's mission is to promote the Peoria Area as a destination for visitors and contribute to the economic growth of the communities they represent.
