Old-Time Music Preservation Association to hold annual piano playing contest

 

PEORIA, IL - The Old Time Music Preservation Association will host the 37th annual World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest May 27-29 at the Hotel Pere Marquette.

This year's competition features a variety of talent, with 26 contestants from across the United States, including one contestant from Germany, competing right here in Peoria.

An assortment of Old-time and Ragtime-style compositions will be played at a remarkable level of performance throughout the weekend.

The New Rag competition begins at 7 p.m. Friday, May 27.  The preliminaries for the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 28, in the hotel's Cotillion Room.  Finals begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 29, in the Marquette Ballroom.  Tickets are required for all events and are available at the door.  Admission for the New Rag competition is $5.  Admission is $15 for preliminaries, semi-final and final competitions.

There will be informational workshops held throughout the weekend for the general public to attend.

Topics presented at the workshops include Ragtime/Old-time definitions and playing style, specific composers and compositional style.  This year, Jeff and Ann Barnhart will present an in-depth workshop explaining artistic accompaniment at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 27.  At 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 29, the couple will be conducting a Masters class.  Admission for each workshop is $3.

World-renowned professional Ragtime pianist, Johnny Maddox, is scheduled to perform a duet with the competition's three-time reigning national champion Adam Swanson at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 28, in a performance which promises to be memorable.

            The Old-Time Music Preservation 37th annual World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest will create an economic impact of about $165,000 and fill 300 hotel rooms in the Peoria Area.  There will be about 400 individuals in attendance.

            The PACVB represents an eight county region including Bureau, Fulton, Marshall, Mason, Peoria, Stark, Tazewell, and Woodford.  The organization's mission is to promote the Peoria Area as a destination for visitors and contribute to the economic growth of the communities they represent.
