The museum consists of two buildings that are next door to each other: the Clark-Norris Home, a handsome Prairie Square mansion built in 1900, and the Newell-Bryant House, a stately Greek Revival house dating back to 1853. Driving Directions From I-80: Exit at the Princeton exit (#56.) Turn left at the stop light and travel through town on Main Street. At the four-way stop sign at the Courthouse, turn right. The Museum is behind the Courthouse. There is free parking on Park Avenue in front of the Museum. Captain Swift Covered Bridge 1600 N Epperson Rd Princeton, IL 61356 One Mile west of Princeton. The strength of the bridge comes from its burr arch design, an idea patented by Theodore Burr of New York in 1804. Made entirely of wood, it is the only two lane covered bridge in Illinois. Partridge St Metamora, IL 61548 (309) 367-4470 The Metamora Courthouse was built in 1845 and served as the center of county government until the county seat was moved to Eureka in 1896. It is one of two surviving courthouses on the historic Eighth Judicial Circuit traveled by Abraham Lincoln. In 1978 the Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The first floor of the two-story brick structure contains a central hall flanked by two exhibit rooms, one displaying artifacts of early local history, the other with exhibits describing the 1850s court system and Lincoln's life on the Eighth Judicial Circuit. On the second floor, the former courtroom and two small chambers are furnished to represent the era during which Lincoln practiced law. Visitors may take guided tours of the building or view the rooms and exhibits on their own. A ten-minute video history of the building, which includes images and interpretation of the second floor, is available for viewing. Owen Lovejoy Homestead Rt. 6 & Sixth St Princeton, IL 61356 (815) 875-2616 Visit Website The Owen Lovejoy Homestead, built in 1838 was the home of the famous abolitionist minister. Part of the Underground Railroad, rooms are furnished with period furniture and visitors can peer into the hidden area above the stairs where runaway slaves hid. The museum is a part of the Historical Association of Princeville (incorporated in 1987). The 15,000 square foot handicap accessible facility features antique agriculture equipment, steam powered tractors and threshers, area artifacts, a genealogy research area, and much more. In 2004 the Akron Townhouse School was moved to the museum grounds. The townhouse school allows children and adults alike to take a step back in time and participate in a day in the life of a student in the early 1900’s. Regular Hours: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10am to 2pm and by appointment. With seating for 35, the conference facilities are equipped with state of the art audio visual equipment and wireless internet connection. The facility also includes a full kitchen. Red Covered Bridge Route 26 Princeton, IL 61356 Go 1 -1/2 mile north of Princeton on Route 26 to see one of five remaining covered bridges in Illinois, this bridge was built in 1863 and is still open to traffic. It crosses Big Bureau Creek and was once part of the Peoria-Galena Trail. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Drive-trough. Ronald Reagan Museum 300 E. Cerf College Center at Eureka College, the museum collection numbers over 10,000 items with over 3,000 on display from President Reagan's Eureka College student days, movie and TV career, governorship of California and two terms as President of the United States. The majority of artifacts were donated by Reagan himself. The Reagan Peace Garden located on the historic campus, which was founded in 1855, includes a bust of the 40th president and a section of the Berlin Wall. The garden commemorates Reagan's 1982 campus speech that initiated the "beginning of the end" of the Cold War by proposing the elimination of an entire class of nuclear weapons.
