Jerk Hut
John Sims and Jamie Sims, Owners
1200 W. Main Street Suite 21A Peoria, IL 61606John Sims opened Jerk Hut simply because he was tired of making trips to Chicago to get properly prepared jerk-style food so that's when he and his daughter, Jamie, opened their business in Campustown.
This first-generation, family-owned business has been thriving from day one, when Jerk Hut opened its doors in August 2020. Despite the pandemic as the backdrop, John opened his doors that summer day to be greeted by a long line of customers ready to indulge their desire for authentic Caribbean cuisine.
John enjoys the people, food and atmosphere in that order. Though the current financial climate provides a challenge, John still manages to do hand-over-fist business thanks to his local customers.
“We understand that they are the business. We are delivering satisfactory service to customers,” said John.
What makes Jerk Hut stand out is that it is the only restaurant offering authentic Caribbean Cuisine in Peoria.
John envisions first expanding, then passing the business on to his daughters, who already are involved in operating the restaurant. His inspiration comes from being a lifelong entrepreneur who has owned multiple businesses.
“Do due diligence. Do not be afraid, but make sure you do your research,” said John when asked about his advice to new business owners.
John gives back to the local Black community by sponsoring programs and providing free business mentorship.
He believes COVID-19 affected revenue and has changed the way business is done, but they adapted to continue safely serving customers during the safety restrictions that were put in place.
From jerk oxtails and escovitch to jerk chicken tacos and fried plantain washed down with authentic ginger beer, Jerk Hut's got your craving for Caribbean food covered!
