Summer is officially over, and it’s time once more for midwesterners' favorite season… Soup Season! If you’re looking for a hearty bowl of your favorite ingredients soaked in warm broth, then Discover Peoria has you covered with five of the best spots to get a cup (or bowl) of soup in the heart of Illinois. Now we know what you’re thinking, there’s not a restaurant in Illinois that can compete with Nana’s homemade French Onion soup recipe… we just want to give you some options for when she needs the night off. Let’s get into it!

Cyd’s in the Park

5805 North Knoxville Road, Peoria, IL 61614

If you’re out exploring Donovan Park, you may have stopped into Cyd’s in the Park for lunch or dinner, but did you know that they have great house-made soups? You should really try the tomato basil, it’s gluten-free, low-calorie, and perfect for vegetarians. Check back often to see what other soups Cyd’s adds to the menu. Lunch hours are from 11-3 p.m. and dinner is served from 5-9 p.m.

One World

61245 W Main St, Peoria, IL 6160

Oh, One World… do you have anything on your menu we don’t want to eat? Let’s just talk about the soups. They rotate out their soups, but if you’re lucky you can catch the cream of chicken, with peas and carrots, which is our favorite. Call ahead and see what they’re offering today. One world is located on Main Street, kitty-corner to Bradley University, and is a great spot for a busy college student or hurried professor to grab a delicious bite to eat. Or anybody, really! The restaurant is open from 8:30-  7 p.m. but closes at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Sweet Basil Cafe of Peoria

714 W Lake Ave, Peoria, IL 61614

You’ve got to try Sweet Basil Cafe, located in Sheridan Village. For us, it’s the creamy southwest soup, filled with chicken, black beans, corn and red pepper. The best part is, they sprinkle it with Fritos! Make sure you call ahead though because this delicious bowl of soup only comes through once a week. If you’re looking for something a little more old-fashioned, chicken noodle soup is a permanent staple on Sweet Basil Cafe’s menu. The chefs batch their soups up fresh every morning and serve them up from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Get yourself a bowl for $4.99, or a quart for $7.99. Better yet, pair a bowl with a salad or a sandwich for $9.99!

208 N Main St, Morton, IL 61550

If you’re discovering Morton or just looking for some good soup, Kemp208 is sure to wet your whistle. They offer either a cup of soup ($4) or a bowl ($6), and you can pair it with a salad or one of their famous paninis for only $12. Their menu changes seasonally so call ahead and see what soups they’re offering today… if you’re lucky you’ll catch them when they’re serving up the miso and soy chicken soup. Absolutely delicious, and a perfect lunch for a Fall day in Morton. Kemp is closed Sunday and Monday, and lunch service stops at 2 p.m., but dinner is served from 5-9 p.m.

Pho on Main 2

1200 W Main St, Peoria, IL 61606

How could we write a blog about soup and not mention Pho on Main 2. Rice noodle soup is a delicacy of Viet Nam and Pho on Main has tons of options to choose from. Like the meatball, steak or well-done brisket! Prices range from $9-15 with plenty of customizations available. We’re feeling the call of the sea, however, and will be ordering the rice noodle soup with shrimp next time we’re on Main. They’re closed on Mondays but otherwise open from 11-7:30 p.m.

And that’s it! If you need some soup on the fly and don’t want to wait an hour or more for your own batch to simmer, why not check out some Discover Peoria-approved soup spots? Plenty of soup for you!
