“Will it Play in Peoria” might be an old vaudeville saying, but today it is as much about our thriving sports scene as it is about our region’s nightlife. Thanks to the Peoria Chiefs, Minor League baseball is a classic summertime tradition in Peoria. Currently a St. Louis Cardinal's Class A affiliate, the Chiefs have been delighting fans since 1983 when they were known as the Peoria Suns before taking on their current name in 1984.
The Peoria Rivermen crash the boards as part of the Southern Professional Hockey League and are the best show on ice since 1984. Originally known as the Prancers, the Rivermen have been a Peoria favorite for decades at the downtown Carver Arena.
Also calling Carver Arena at the Peoria Civic Center home are the Bradley Braves NCAA basketball team. The Braves helped to put Peoria on the map as a basketball city in the 1950s with several national championship runs. Today, the Braves continue to dominate the court as part of the Missouri Valley Conference.
The latest addition to the sports landscape is Peoria City Soccer, pre-professional soccer will be played at Shea Stadium in Peoria starting in Spring 2021.
