The original structures were created on plywood by local artists for the first Festival of Lights in 1985. Because of deterioration in storage, the scenes were restored as vinyl prints mounted to aluminum backing in 1999, giving the added advantage that the displays take on a three-dimensional appearance at night. Unlike the rest of the Festival of Lights, the nativity project is funded exclusively by private donations through the Nativity Display Association. The maintenance annually is about $1,200.
